Performance Anxiety In Bed: What It Really Is

Start with the word, because the word is doing damage.

Anxiety sounds like a fault in you. Something wired wrong, a weak nerve, a personality you were unlucky enough to be issued. Men hear it and quietly decide they are the anxious type now.

That is not what is happening.

Your body is not malfunctioning. It is reading the situation correctly. You have set the bedroom up as a test, with a pass and a fail and a judge, and your body is responding to a test exactly the way it should. Alert. Braced. Blood out to the arms and legs, ready to deal with a threat, which is precisely the opposite of what an erection needs.

Performance anxiety in bed is the most common thing men bring me, and it is also the thing they name worst. It is not a disorder of the mind. It is a body doing the right thing in a room you have framed wrong.

The loop, in four steps

Almost every case I see runs the same way.

One night goes badly. You were exhausted, or drunk, or distracted, or it was new and you were nervous. Bodies have off nights the way voices have off days. Nothing here is unusual.

You give it a meaning. This is the only step that actually matters, and it happens in the ten minutes afterwards while you lie there in the dark. You do not think, that was a bad night. You think, this is starting. You take one data point and turn it into a diagnosis about yourself.

The fear arrives before the next time. Now, days ahead, you are already in the room. You are hoping it works. You are watching the calendar. You are, in the plainest sense, worried about something that has not happened yet.

The fear does to your body exactly what the first night did. Breath goes high and shallow. Attention leaves your body and goes up to the ceiling to watch. Muscles brace. And with the breath high and the attention gone, the erection goes, and now you have your proof.

That is the loop. Notice where it lives. Not in your body. In the meaning you gave one night, and in the watching that meaning produced.

Men look for a physical cause for months when the second step is where the whole thing was built.

The four things men do that make it worse

Every one of these feels like a solution while you are doing it.

Monitoring. You check. Is it still hard, is it going, how long has it been. This is the single most destructive habit in the whole pattern, because you cannot be in your head and in your body at the same time. Checking the erection is precisely how you stop feeling anything, and feeling was what was holding it up.

Rehearsing. You run the evening in advance. What you will do, what order, what you will say if it goes wrong. Rehearsal turns a bed into a stage, and there is no version of a stage that is relaxing.

Avoiding. You get busy. You go to bed later than her. You start the argument that means it will not come up tonight. Avoidance works beautifully for one evening and makes the next one twice as loaded, and after a few months of it, the two of you are further apart than the original problem ever put you.

Drinking. You have a couple to take the edge off, and it does take the edge off. It also softens the erection and blunts the feeling, so the night confirms your fear while you are too numb to tell the difference. Then next time you need three.

If you recognise all four, you are not broken. You are a man solving the wrong problem intelligently.

Take the act off the table

Here is the piece of work that changes this fastest, and it is the one men resist hardest.

For two or three weeks, agree with her that penetration is not happening. Not tonight, not on Thursday, not at all in that window. Off the table completely, by joint decision, in daylight, with words.

Everything else stays. Touching, kissing, hands, mouths, being naked together, lying close for an hour with nothing having to go anywhere.

Part of you will read that as giving up. It is the opposite. A test with nothing at stake stops being a test. When there is no pass and no fail available, your body has nothing to be alert about, and the thing you have been trying to force starts showing up on its own. Almost every man in this window reports getting hard at the exact moment it does not count, which tells you everything about where the problem lives.

Tell her why, plainly. Not because of her. Because you want to be in your body again instead of marking yourself out of ten.

And when the window ends, do not treat the first night back as an exam either. Carry on as you were and let it go where it goes.

The rest of the work

Breath, twice a day. Lie down, one hand on the belly. In slowly through the nose, belly first, then chest. Out slowly, longer out than in. Ten breaths. This is the fastest tool you own for telling your body it is not in danger. It only works in the bedroom if it is automatic outside it.

Attention drills. During any physical closeness, pick one thing and stay with it. Her skin under your hand. Your own feet. The weight of your hips. You will drift up to the ceiling a hundred times. Coming back is the exercise, not staying.

Train alone, without the audience. Learn where you are on the arousal scale, zero to ten, on your own. Zero is nothing, eight is high but still steerable, nine is the point of no return. Learning to steer with nobody watching takes judgement out of it while you build the skill.

Move every day. Still water goes stagnant and flowing water stays clean. A stressed man who sits all day is a pond. Sweat, walk, get out of the chair. Not decoration. Drainage.

Sleep, and cut the screens. Broken sleep raises the alarm level in everything. And porn especially. You have a pool of dopamine and every time you watch, you spend from it. Spend it fast enough and real skin in a real bed is not loud enough any more. That is a volume dial turned the wrong way, and it turns back.

Two things I am not going to skip

If the mornings have gone quiet for months, go and see a doctor before you train anything. While you sleep, healthy men get erections several times a night, and the morning one is the last one, the one you happen to be awake for. It happens with the mind switched off, so it reports on the body alone. A long stop can point to blood pressure, blood sugar, sleep apnoea, medicine you are already taking, or low testosterone. I am a coach. I am not a doctor. I do not diagnose anything and I never will. There is more in what months without morning erections mean.

And if what you are carrying is bigger than the bedroom, if it is dread most days, or you have stopped sleeping, or you have stopped wanting anything at all, please talk to a doctor or a therapist as well. That is not a lesser route. Some of the men I work with do both, and the ones who do usually move faster. Low drive that has been sitting on you for a long time deserves its own look, and I have written about losing your sex drive at forty separately.

What to expect

Week one. Nothing changes in bed. What changes is that you can name the loop while it is running. That is real progress even though it feels like none.

Week four. The window with penetration off the table is doing its work. Men usually report that they are enjoying being touched again, which sounds small and is not.

Week nine. Roughly where I hear that a night went fine and they did not think about it afterwards. Not thinking about it afterwards is the actual finish line, not the erection.

Plenty of men take longer, and later is not failure.

From my own road

I know this loop from the inside, from the other end of it.

In my twenties I finished in about a minute, and I never told a single person. Not a friend, not a doctor, certainly not the woman in the bed. I drank before, because that took the edge off. I made sure the evening happened late enough that it was easy to skip. Every one of the four habits in this article, I ran, for years, and each of them felt like handling it.

What actually moved it was stopping the drinking at twenty three and starting yoga, which put me back inside my own body for the first time in about a decade. Everything else I learned later sat on top of that.

Test this on yourself rather than believing me. Your own evenings are the only evidence that counts.
