Ask this question out loud and two groups of men will shout at you.
The first says it makes no difference at all. Do it as often as you like, your body replaces everything, stop worrying.
The second says never again. Every release is a leak. Real men hold it forever and anyone who does not is weak.
I have been coaching men for seven years and I do not believe either of them. Both are men arguing about a number instead of paying attention to their own body.
Here is a better way to answer how often should a man ejaculate at 40. Start from a rough guide, then let your own signals correct it.
The starting point I use
Take the number of your years and release roughly every that many days.
A man of forty, roughly every forty days. A man of twenty-five, roughly every twenty-five. That is the old sperm economy idea and I use it because it does two useful things at once. It slows most men down, and it gives them something to measure against.
Read that again though, because men always hear it as a law. It is not a law. It is a starting point to experiment from.
Some men at forty land nearer two weeks and feel excellent. Some land at eight weeks. Your job is not to obey the number. Your job is to start somewhere sensible instead of starting from whatever habit you fell into at nineteen.
Why forty is not twenty-five
At twenty-five most men can abuse themselves fairly hard and get away with it. Bad sleep, drink, no training, release every day, and the body still turns up.
Something changes with the forties. The recovery is slower. Testosterone is generally lower than it was, sleep is easier to break, stress has had fifteen more years to accumulate, and the margin you used to have is gone.
That is not decline. It is a body that has stopped tolerating nonsense and started sending you the bill on the same day.
So the same frequency that cost you nothing at twenty-five can cost you two flat days at forty. Same act, different price.
The five signals that tell you your own rhythm
This is the actual work. Stop asking the internet and start reading yourself.
For the two days after you release, watch these five things. Then compare them with a normal week.
Sleep. Did you sleep well the night after, or did you wake at three and lie there?
Mood. Steady, or flat and slightly grey? Short-tempered over nothing?
Morning erections. While you sleep, healthy men get erections several times a night. The morning one is just the last one, the one you happen to be awake for. It happens with the mind switched off, so it reports on the body alone. Note whether it is still there the next two mornings, and how firm.
Drive. Do you want your woman, your work, your training? Or does everything feel like it can wait?
Training. Weaker in the gym, or the same? Most men notice it in the legs first.
If all five are fine, your current rhythm is fine. If two or three of them dip for a day or two every single time, you are releasing more often than your body wants right now.
That is the whole method. Not a number somebody shouted on a forum. Five signals in your own body, watched honestly for a month.
How to actually run the experiment
Pick an interval. Forty days is the starting point at forty, but if that sounds impossible, start at three weeks. An experiment you will actually finish beats a perfect one you abandon in five days.
Hold it once, all the way through. Watch the five signals along the way, not only afterwards.
Write one line a day somewhere. Slept, mood, morning, drive, training. One line, ten seconds.
Then adjust. Longer if the signals kept improving. Shorter if you went grey and stayed grey, which is usually a sign you are holding without circulating.
Do it for three months before you decide anything. The first month tells you almost nothing because everything is still novelty.
Holding is not the same as sitting on it
If you stretch the interval and feel worse, this is usually why.
Still water goes stagnant. Flowing water stays clean. A man who holds for weeks while sitting at a desk, scrolling, and gritting his teeth is a pond with a lid on it.
The energy has to move. Train hard enough to sweat. Walk. Breathe deep into the belly twice a day. Testicle breathing is the practice I give men for exactly this, because it teaches you to move that energy instead of only being able to discharge it.
Holding alone is not the practice. Holding plus circulating is the practice.
And if you go grey and flat a few weeks in, that is common enough to have a name. It is the semen retention flatline, it is not damage, and it passes.
Permanent total retention is not the goal
I will say this plainly because a lot of men need to hear it from somebody who practises.
Never releasing again is not the target for most men. I am suspicious of anyone who says it is right for everyone, and I have watched men turn it into a competition with themselves that made them tense, joyless and strange to live with.
Sex with a woman you love is not a leak. A man who is frightened of his own release has swapped one prison for another.
The point of stretching the interval is to break the automatic habit, feel the difference, and choose your own rhythm on purpose. That is all. If you want more on the older man’s version of this, I go into it further in semen retention for men over 40.
Get the body checked first
If your drive has fallen off a cliff, if the morning erections have been quiet for months, or if you are tired in a way sleep does not touch, that is a doctor’s appointment and not a frequency question.
I am a coach. I am not a doctor. I do not diagnose anything and I never will, and no honest man will tell you what is happening inside your body from the other side of a screen.
Low testosterone, blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid and sleep problems all show up in exactly these signals. Most of them have nothing to do with sex at all and you would want to know about them anyway. Go and find out, then come back and experiment.
What to expect
Week one. Mostly restlessness and a lot of thinking about it. Normal. The habit is arguing with you.
Week four. Steadier sleep and a steadier temper are usually the first things men notice, and most men miss them because they were watching for libido.
Week nine. Roughly where the rhythm starts to feel like yours rather than a rule you are following. You stop counting and start noticing.
Plenty of men take longer, and longer is not failure.
From my own road
On the island in the south of Thailand I went through very long stretches without ejaculating. Months. That was the training and I do not regret an hour of it.
But I would not live that way now, and the men who taught me most did not live that way either. What those years gave me was not a rule. It was the ability to tell the difference between wanting something and being pulled by a habit, which is a distinction I could not make at all before I went.
In my forties I found my own rhythm by watching those five signals, the same as I am asking you to do. It is not the number I would have guessed at thirty.
