You wake up and nothing is happening down there, and it has been that way for months now. You have not said it out loud to anybody, and quietly it has started to worry you.
Good that you are paying attention. Your body is telling you something and you are listening. Most men look away.
Let me tell you what that signal means, what it does not mean, and what to do about it in the right order.
What morning erections actually are
They are not really about the morning.
While you are asleep, your body moves through different stages of sleep, over and over, all night long. During those stages, healthy men get erections. Several times a night. Every night. You are asleep, so you never know about it.
The morning one is simply the last one of the night, the one you happen to be awake for. That is the only thing special about it.
This happens in young men and it happens in older men. It is not something that belongs to twenty year olds.
Why it is a signal worth reading
Because it happens when your mind is switched off.
An erection needs blood to arrive and blood to stay. That is the plumbing. During sleep, your head is out of the way completely, so what you see in the morning is the plumbing on its own, with no thinking on top.
That gives you two very different pictures, and you need to know which one you are in.
Picture one. The mornings are still there, but with a partner you struggle.
If your body is doing it fine while you sleep, the equipment is working when nothing is asked of it. So the difficulty is arriving somewhere else. Usually that is stress, worry, pressure, a head full of noise, attention that is anywhere except in your own body.
That is not small and it is not in your imagination. But it is the kind of thing that responds to training. This is most of the men who come to me.
Picture two. The mornings have stopped completely, for months.
That is a different conversation, and I am not going to soften it or dress it up.
Please go and see a doctor first
I want you to hear this warmly, because I mean it.
If the mornings have gone quiet for months, book an appointment. Not because something terrible is happening. Because your body is showing you a light on the dashboard, and the sensible thing is to open the bonnet and look.
A long stop can point to blood pressure, blood sugar, sleep apnoea (that is where your breathing keeps stopping and starting while you are asleep), side effects from medicine you are already taking, or low testosterone. Those are all things a doctor can check properly with a conversation and some simple tests.
I am a coach. I am not a doctor. I do not diagnose anything, I do not treat anything, and I will never tell you what is happening inside your body from the other side of a screen. Nobody honest would.
And here is the part men do not expect. Most of the things on that list have nothing to do with sex at all. They are things you would want to know about anyway, for your heart, your sleep, your energy. Your body may be using the bedroom to get your attention about something else entirely. That is not bad news. That is early news, which is the good kind.
One more thing I have watched many times. Men who go and get checked feel lighter afterwards, even when the answer is boring. Not knowing is heavier than knowing. Go and find out.
Then come back and train.
What training cannot do, and what it can
Training cannot replace a doctor. It cannot undo a side effect of something you are taking. It cannot fix something that lives in your blood. Anyone telling you that breathing exercises replace a medical check is not on your side.
Here is what is genuinely yours to work on, once you have been checked.
1. Sleep.
Those erections happen during sleep. Broken sleep means less of that. So sleep is not a side issue, it is the room the whole thing happens in.
Nothing clever needed. Same bedtime. A properly dark room. No screen in your hands for the last stretch of the evening. Go easy on alcohol late at night. Boring, and it works.
2. Stress.
Here is how I think about it. A pond has water that is not moving, so it goes stagnant and gets invaded by bacteria and microbes. A river is the same water, but flowing, and flowing water stays clean.
A stressed man is a pond. Everything held, nothing moving, jaw tight, shoulders up by his ears, breathing shallow all day long. You want to be a river.
So move your body every day. Breathe deep and slow, into the belly, on purpose, several times a day. Get out of the chair. It is not spiritual decoration, it is drainage.
3. The pelvic floor.
This is the sheet of muscle at the bottom of you, running from the base of the penis back to the anus. You already know it. It is the muscle you use to stop yourself urinating halfway through.
Squeeze the base, the perineum (the patch between the testicles and the anus) and the anus together, like one fist closing. Hold for a slow count. Then let go completely, and feel the letting go too. Both halves matter. A muscle that can only clench is not strong, it is stuck.
4. Attention.
During sex, where are you actually? Most men are in their own heads, watching themselves from the ceiling, checking and judging.
You cannot be in your head and in your body at the same time. Attention only goes to one place.
So practise coming back. Feel your feet. Feel your breath. Feel her skin under your hand and stay with that one thing. You will drift a hundred times. Coming back is the exercise, not staying.
5. Cut what numbs you.
Be honest about what has been slowly turning the volume down. Heavy screen use. Alcohol. Being permanently half distracted.
The trouble with all of them is the same. They teach your body to need more and more to feel anything at all. Then real skin, in a real bed, with a real woman, is not loud enough any more. That is not weakness in you. It is just a volume dial that got turned the wrong way, and it turns back.
What to expect
Week one. Nothing changes, except two things. You have booked the appointment, and you are sleeping a little better. That is a fine week one.
Week four. More feeling, usually before more hardness. Men often tell me things feel more alive, more present, more theirs. That is the first sign.
Week nine. If your check came back clear, this is roughly where I start hearing that mornings show up again, or that they are firmer, or simply more often. For some it is sooner. For plenty it is later, and later is not failure.
Always remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint.
From my own life
In my forties, my problem stopped being speed and became hardness. After all those years of practice, all that teaching, there I was in my own bed with the same worry any man has.
I did not find a shortcut. I went back to exactly the boring list above and worked it, month after month. Slower than I wanted. It came back.
I tell you that so you know I am not standing above you giving orders. I am one step further down the same road, an elder brother turning round to say the ground is solid here, keep coming.
And run your own experiments. Test what I tell you against your own body and see whether it is true for you. Do not take it as dogma.
If you have been checked out and now you want a hand building the training side, book a free 30 minute call and we can talk it through.
